Within a Forest Dark

Forest Dark coverBy Michael Virtanen

When Jack Kirkland travels to the Adirondack Mountains to investigate the death of a well-to-do engineer, he expects to uncover medical malpractice. Instead he finds evidence of murder and falls in love with the only suspect, the dead man’s girlfriend. Will Kirkland give up his chance at happiness to get at the truth?

Within a Forest Dark won the Adirondack Center for Writing’s award for best fiction of 2007. In 2013, the author published a second novel, The River’s Tale, in which Kirkland appears as a secondary character investigating a rafting fatality in the Hudson Gorge.

Praise for Within a Forest Dark:

An engaged, complicated, compelling journey into the motivations of middle age. Virtanen has written a cross-genre mystery that rejects  the usual question of who, replacing it with a much-deeper why.

–Pam Houston, author of Cowboys Are My Weakness

The story gathers momentum like a freight train.

Fred LeBrun, columnist for the Albany Times Union

Within a Forest Dark is a riveting tale of high order.

–Bernard F. Conners, author of Dancehall

Michael Virtanen is a political reporter for the Associated Press. He also has written numerous articles about the Adirondacks. On one assignment, he got frostbite while skiing through the High Peaks Wilderness, but he has lost none of his zest for outdoor adventure.
